Jill Michaels, a native of Twin Falls, Idaho, decided to establish a career as a freelance writer in 1999. A year later, her first article was published in TvZona, then a weekly TV guide in Tucson, Arizona. A tourist trip to view a space shuttle launch that same year landed her a cover story with TvZona.
That event marked the beginning of Michaels’ fruitful media relationship with NASA. Michaels has attended four space shuttle launches to date and followed those space flight missions (STS-99, STS-101, STS-98, and STS-111) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida. She has conducted numerous interviews with current and former astronauts.
Michaels has now published a total of 30 freelance articles, as follows:
· 18 published in U.S. newspapers (TvZona, The Times-News, Lockport Union-Sun & Journal and Star-Gazette);
· 9 published in U.S. magazines (The Carefree Enterprise Magazine, SW Aviator, Go, Life in the Finger Lakes, IDAHO Magazine, and Bay Runner);
· 1 published in an Australian magazine (Qantas: The Australian Way), and
· 2 published in British magazines (BOARDS and DIVER).
Of these 30 articles, 8 have been published as cover stories.
Her relocation in July 2007 to the Clear Lake area of Houston, home of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, has strengthened Michaels’ professional niche as a writer with actual working experience with NASA. Astronomer/writer David H. Levy, science editor of PARADE Magazine, is one of her freelance writing references.
Michaels welcomes e-mails or article commissions from magazine editors and newspaper editors around the globe. She is also available as a consultant for any professional writing or editing needs.
