Jill Michaels, a native of Twin Falls, Idaho, decided in 1999 to establish a career as a freelance writer. Her first article was published in 2000 in TvZona, then a weekly TV guide in Tucson, Arizona. A tourist trip to view a space shuttle launch that same year landed her a cover story with TvZona.
That milestone event marked the beginning of Michaels’ fruitful media relationship with NASA. To date she has attended four space shuttle launches and followed those missions (STS-99, STS-101, STS-98 and STS-111) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida.
Michaels, a resident of Bay Area Houston since July 2007, has covered and will continue to cover shuttle flights (STS-120, STS-126, STS-119, and STS-125—the final Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission) from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in southeast Houston. She has conducted numerous interviews with current and former astronauts during the past nine years.
To date, Michaels has published 42 freelance articles in the U.S., Australia and the U.K.:
· 18 stories in 7 different U.S. newspapers (The Times-News in Idaho; Lockport Union-Sun & Journal and Star-Gazette in New York State; Cohasset Mariner in Massachusetts; Appeal Tribune in Oregon; The Bowie Blade-News in Maryland, and Camas-Washougal Post-Record in Washington State);
· 21 stories in 9 different U.S. magazines (TvZona and The Carefree Enterprise Magazine in Arizona; SW Aviator in New Mexico; Go and Life in the Finger Lakes in New York State; IDAHO Magazine; Bay Runner and The SCENE in Texas, and Air & Space/Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.);
· 1 in an Australian magazine (Qantas: The Australian Way), and
· 2 in British magazines (BOARDS and DIVER).
Of these 42 articles, 14 have been published as cover stories.
Her relocation to the southeastern area of Houston and her actual working experience at NASA have strengthened Michaels’ professional niche as a space-savvy freelance writer. Her writing references include:
· a former astronaut living in Arizona;
· David H. Levy—astronomer/writer and science editor of PARADE Magazine, and
· Sean D. Tucker—aerobatic pilot and seasoned airshow aviator.
Michaels welcomes e-mails or article commissions from magazine editors and newspaper editors from around the globe. She especially enjoys writing articles for astronauts’ hometown newspapers and for the airlines’ in-flight magazines. Michaels is also available as a consultant for any professional writing or editing needs (film or television writers must be represented by either an agent or an attorney).
